Skills vs Values Which to Prioritize When Hiring

“Mommy N, ang talagang problema namin sa paghire ng tao is yung attitude at habit nila.  Yes, may skills sila pero yung attitude hindi pasok sa values ng company.”

This is a question from Ramil, one of our Grow Your Business, Pinoy! Movement community members. Member ka na ba? Sali ka na dito!

Nakakarelate ka ba kay Ramil?

Skills Vs. Values

I’ve been there many times when we were just “newbies” in business. Sobrang sakit sa ulo. I can’t count how many employees I fired or forced to resign because our values didn’t match theirs.

Now, we are wiser.  Not perfect, but wiser.

There was a time when we had to let go of some employees.  Puro values ang issue.

Sayang ang training, time, and money spent on them.

That’s why it’s important to know the values that you’re looking for when hiring people.

Now, how do you know if an applicant’s values align with yours?

Let me tell you another story.

“Mommy N, Why haven’t I met my one true love yet?” My young friend was exasperated!

“What are you looking for in a husband ba?” I asked.

She paused for a while, looked up at the ceiling, and started describing it to me.

Here’s what she wants for a future husband:

“Kind, malambing, playful, smart, brown eyes, and siyempre, yung mahal ako

Yung bang someone who makes me happy and is always there when I get home to kiss me. “

“You already found him,” I said with a grin.

She was dumbfounded.

“Sino?”

“Eh, si Frodo. Yung dog mo!

Be Crystal Clear About What Your Values Are

If you want to find your one true love, you have to know what you’re looking for in a future husband or wife. If you want to hire the right people, you have to know exactly what you are looking for. And it’s not just about the skills.

Actually, there is a saying: “Hire for attitude. Train for skills.”

When the skills are not yet there, may pag-asa pa.  We can always train.  But if the attitude is not there, no amount of training can fix it.

Do you agree?

Attitude is not the problem.

Attitude is just the behavior that we see.

The problem is what drives the attitude: what goes on inside the person.  What are his values and beliefs?

What Values Are You Looking For

As I said, we have become wiser.  This was after we realized that even before we start hiring, we had to identify what our own values are.

I’ll tell you about it in the next blog.
